Proper measurements are everything. Once again for those in the back…proper measurements are EVERYTHING.
It can make the difference between your dream room, and a nightmare project. You could have gorgeous cabinetry fitted out perfectly, or a room full of unusable, non-returnable custom cabinets. Sad!

Step 1
Grab some paper and pencil and draw a rough outline of your room. This will allow you to keep track of measurements as you go.

Step 2
You might want a partner for these next few steps. Measure the basic perimeter of the room, making notes along the way. Be as exact as possible. Every fraction counts!

Step 3
Measure the height of the room at all four corners as well as the center of each wall. Include measurements of window height and width as well as their location on the wall. Measure and indicate location and size of room fixtures such as stove, refrigerator, oven, etc.

Step 4
For irregular shaped rooms, divide the room into square sections. Measure those areas as you would a square shaped room. Add the square footage of all the areas together. Make note of all areas on your drawing.

Step 5
Take a video of the entire room. Stand in the middle of the room and slowly turn to capture the room from every angle. Also capture photos of every wall in the room. You can never have too many photos!
